Easy step guide to register your ASUS Google Nexus 2013 on Asus.com website

My friends, many of you may have received the latest Google Nexus 7 2013 tablet courtesy Nestle Kitkat and some of you may have purchased this awesome tablet from market.  The Google Nexus 7 2013 is manufactured by ASUS and registering the same with Asus is equally important to protect your self against device malfunction and other issued.

I am giving this easy step tutorial where you can register your Nexus 7 2013 (or any other ASUS product for that matter).  Kindly remember, the asus website is damn slow so you have to be patient with it.

First of all kindly visit the ASUS website here.  Kindly fill in the credentials you want for your Asus product.  I chose Google as login option as it is simpler and quite easy to remember in long run.

I assume that you will also have chosen Google/Facebook/Yahoo/Windows Live so then we can proceed. Next up the website will ask for authorisation to use your above account, accept it and proceed

In the next page, kindly give the password you may want to use in future for ASUS page.  Also fill in other relevant details, agree to Terms and Conditions and press Submit.  Now you have registered with Asus, the next step is product registration.

Coming back to your Nexus 7 2013 tablet you have received,  the Serial No. is on the package.  The serial number given in the Tablet . Settings > About Tablet > Status is a part number and wont work on Asus website.    The Serial No. is located on below side of the package and is inverted.

The serial number printed is very small, hence an easier way to get it is to use the camera on your Nexus 7 2013 and snap a image by zooming on the serial number.  This way you dont have to check again and again on the box for the serial number.

Having taken this snap, head back to your Gmail, where you would have received a mail from Asus as below with One Time Link.

Click on this one time link and you will be taken to a product registration page as below :

Click on the Product Registration link and you will be led to a new page as below :

Here you have to just fill in your Serial Number and the Product Type and Product Name automatically gets filled in.  In the Reseller Name put 'NESTLE KITKAT' and in the date put in the date you received the Nexus 7 2013.  (Non Kitkat winners may put the individual reseller name as given on the bill and the purchase date).  Press submit after filling in the details and you will get this page.

Congratulations, you have successfully registered your Google Nexus 7 2013 with Asus.   However this does not mean that you can abuse your tablet :P use it diligently and it will serve your purpose.

In case you couldnt complete the One Time Link from ASUS on time, you will get the following page from Asus :

Fill in your email and the Captcha code and you will receive the One Time link again in your email.  You can then follow the above procedure.  Hope the above tutorial has been useful to you, enjoy your tablet, LIKE AND TWEET  this article and comboupdates.com

How to Install Custom ROMS using Safestrap on Galaxy Note 3!

With the AT&T SM-N900A and Verizon SM-N900V Galaxy Note 3s having a locked bootloader the entire Android development was completely dead, until the release of Safestrap Recovery. Using Safestrap Recovery you can install custom ROMS even with the Galaxy Note 3 having a locked bootloader.

The Safestrap Recovery creates new "virtual" partitions slots where you can install custom ROMS, completely bypassing the whole bootloader process and essentially creating its own "ecosystem" to install ROMS and other flash zip files from!

To make things ever better this custom recovery allows you to boot multiple ROMS too! You have the option to install as many as 4 custom ROMS all on your Galaxy Note 3 and switch between them whenever you feel like it!

Follow the guide below to install ROMS on AT&T or Verizon Galaxy Note 3 using Safestrap Recovery!

Note: Your Galaxy Note 3 needs to be rooted, follow one of these guides to root the AT&T or Verizon Galaxy Note 3.

1. Download the Safestrap APK directly to your AT&T or Verizon Galaxy Note 3 using the links below.

Download Safestrap APK for AT&T SM-N900A Galaxy Note 3
Download Safestrap APK for Verizon SM-N900V Galaxy Note 3
2. Using a file manager application, like ES File Explorer navigate to the downloads folders and tap on the Safestrap APK and install it.

If your denied access you need to go into Settings and check mark "Unknown Sources" then try again.

3. Now open up the Safestrap app and grant Superuser request.

4. Select "Install Recovery" and the app will install the custom Safestrap Recovery for the Galaxy Note 3.

5. Reboot your Note 3 and you will see 2 options pop up. Boot into "RECOVERY" or "CONTINUE", tap on "RECOVERY".

6. After you entered into Safestrap Recovery you will see similar options to TWRP like "Install", "Backup" and "Wipe".

7. Before continuing you should make a "Backup" of your stock ROM that you can restore to later just in case something goes wrong when you flash a custom ROM.

To do this select "Backup" and it will save the file in /TWRP/backup.

8.  Now we're going to create virtual partitions so we can start installing custom ROMS.

Tap on "Boot Options" and select any of the slots on the left side of the screen. I'm going to select "ROM-Slot-1" for obvious reasons.

You can install it over the stock ROM, but you really shouldn't!

9. Now you have the options to change the size of the system, data, and cache partitions.

You should leave everything the same except the "Data partition size". Change the size depending on how much room you need including future app installation space and other personal content.

10. Now tap on "Create ROM Slot". This will create your virtual partition for your Galaxy Note 3.

11. When complete "ROM-Slot-1" should now be highlighted, indicating that "ROM-Stock-1" is going to boot up.

Now we need to install a custom ROM.

12. Go back to the main menu and choose "Wipe".

13. Now tap on "Install" on the main menu and locate the ROM you want to install and select it. Slide your finger to confirm the installation.

14. Once complete tap on "Reboot System" and your Galaxy Note 3 will boot into the new custom ROM you just installed!

Volume Boost Sound Mod for Nexus 5! Speakers and Headphones

Check out the video below!

The Nexus 5 is currently one of the greatest devices out right now, but it clearly lacks when it comes to how loud the speakers and headphones can play compared to other major flagship phones.

Luckily for us, Drummerjed and ZeroInfinity from XDA have created a simple flashable zip to easily boost up the volume on the Nexus 5 for both the speakers and headphones. In the video above I demonstrate the difference with and without the mod. The microphone doesn't do a good job to show you the improvements, but take my word for it!

You have a couple of options for the volume boost mod. You can flash a zip file that boosts both the speakers and headphones, only the headphones, only the speakers, or go back to stock volume sound settings.

Follow the quick guide below to boost your Nexus 5's speakers and headphones!

Note: Your Nexus 5 must be rooted, if your not then follow this guide first!

1. Download and transfer your preferred sound mod zip file to your Nexus 5 using the links below.
Download Headphone and Speaker Sound Boost for Nexus 5
Download Headphone Sound Boost for Nexus 5
Download Speaker Sound Boost for Nexus 5
Download Stock Headphone and Speaker Sound Settings for Nexus 5
2. Enter into recovery mode.

3. Select "Install" if your on TWRP or "select zip from SD card" if your on CWM recovery.

Skip step 4 if your on TWRP Recovery

4. Select "choose zip from SD card"

5. Locate the sound boost mod zip file and install it.

6. Reboot and enjoy a louder Nexus 5!

Easy step guide to understanding 'Jailbreak' and jailbreaking iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini and iPod Touch running on iOS 7 and up

The team behind Evasi0n, the evad3rs has released a stable version of Evasi0n7 the jailbreak for iOS 7 and up.  So if you own a iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini or iPod Touch and have upgraded it to iOS 7.0.4 you should go for this jailbreak.  But the question remains why jailbreak and what is a jailbreak.
An easy step guide to jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini and iPod Touch running on iOS 7 and up using the EVASI0N7

To understand Jailbreak you have to understand the environment Apple, the maker of iOS devices operates in.  The Apple provides a secure architecture with many do and donts on iOS.  Even its Apple Play environment is controlled to the extent that you may become suffocated.  But somewhere down the line these donts create lot of problems if you want a unhindered smart phone.  You must have heard a lot of custom ROMS for Android.  Well these custom ROMs are nothing but jailbroken ROM released by modders for the benefit of users who want to use the last drop of resource their smart phone has. In short, jailbreaking is just hacking into your Apple product’s software and opening it up for customization. You can change the way it looks and feels, choose from a host of custom Apps that aren’t available in Apple’s official App store and a whole bunch of other things.

One of the examples of the use of jailbreak is that you cannot use your official iPhone as modem.  With the Evasi0n7 it becomes easy to make your iPhone 5 to become a mobile modem or tethering device for your PC or laptop.  With a Evasi07 Jailbreak you can connect my laptop to my iPhone using USB or WiFi or use it’s 3G Internet connection.

This is just one of the examples of advantages of jailbreak, out there, there is whole new world of tweaks and add-on which you can put on your iOS 7 device.  Other tweaks include features similar to the new Control Centre in IOS 7, except they were even better, allowing you to add or delete icons as per your personal choice.

For the record, jailbreaking will not void your warranty and it’s pretty simple to uninstall a jailbreak if you dont like it.  You just have to restore your device using iTunes. Jailbreak also allows you to access iTunes, the App Store and all your apps and backups just like a normal iOS 7 device.

Now if you are convinced the you need a Jailbroken device, you can proceed reading this post.  For the record the latest release from Team Evasi0n, the Evasi07 is a one click affair and pretty easy to handle unlike installing custom ROMs on Android devices.   If you are ready click on the following links and lets start

1. Windows for those who own a Windows PC

2. Mac for those who own a Apple PC

(It is advisable to unzip the downloaded file and keep it on your desktop)

Next menu on the desk is to check whether your iOS device is compatible for this jailbreak.  This jailbreak is only compatible with IOS 7.0 to 7.0.4.  But you should update your iOS device from iOS 7 to iOS 7.0.4 to get the best out of this jailbreak.

To check your current version, go to Settings>General> About and the third last menu under ‘Version’ will give you the version number of your iOS device.
An easy step guide to jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini and iPod Touch running on iOS 7 and up using the EVASI0N7

Next step is to back up your iOS device.  No matter how new your iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini or iPod Touch is, it is always advisable to make a backup of the device.  You can do it through iTunes in secs.
An easy step guide to jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini and iPod Touch running on iOS 7 and up using the EVASI0N7

Next step is to make sure your battery is more then 40 percent full and connect it to the PC with USB connection.  Once connected go to your desktop where you have saved the unzipped version of Evasi0n7 and double click it.  It will give a pop up like below :
An easy step guide to jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini and iPod Touch running on iOS 7 and up using the EVASI0N7

Click on Jailbreak in that screen and just sit back till Evasi0n7 starts its job
An easy step guide to jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini and iPod Touch running on iOS 7 and up using the EVASI0N7

Now Evasi0n7 will ask you to tap on the new new Evasi0n7 App icon on your iOS device screen (this will generally appear on the second or the third page)
An easy step guide to jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini and iPod Touch running on iOS 7 and up using the EVASI0N7

Once you have tapped the Evasi0n7 icon, it will take two minutes for the Evasi0n7 to do its job and you will get a exit screen as below.  Press exit and remove the USB connection.

An easy step guide to jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini and iPod Touch running on iOS 7 and up using the EVASI0N7

Congratulations, you have jailbroken you iOS 7 device.  Now you will see the Cydia icon in your menu
An easy step guide to jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini and iPod Touch running on iOS 7 and up using the EVASI0N7

Cydia is the unofficial market place where you get all the tweaks and add ons you have been dreaming about.  Remember, never update your iOS 7 firmware if you have used the above process.  If you want you can restore your iOS device to pre jailbreak state and update your firmware.  But dont use the jailbreak after updating your firmware till evad3rs release the jailbreak for that particular device.

You can watch the video below to get some of the tweaks and understand them.

Three of the best tweaks are ModMyi 7, SwipeSelection and Hidden Springboard settings.  The SwipeSelection lets you to simply swipe across the screen to select text, instead of using the often infuriating magnifying glass. It can also make repositioning the cursor to add punctuation or letters pretty easy.  Hidden Springboard allows you to customize the way the OS looks and feels while ModMyi 7 allows you to use tethering, even if it’s not enabled by your carrier.

Just in case you are still in doubt over jailbreak, over 70 % iPhones and iPads manufactured by Apple are jailbroken so you are not the only one to use it.

Enhancing the speed and Extending your battery life in Android 4.4 KITKAT using the AndroidRunTime (ART) instead of Dalvik runtime

One of the few things that the latest release from Google, the Android 4.4 KITKAT has brought to the table is a nice option to choose the runtime you want for your Android device.  Earlier Android versions upto the Android 4.3 used the Dalvik runtime. But with this release Google has given users options to choose between the AndroidRunTime (ART) or Dalvik Runtime.
Enhancing the speed and Extending your battery life in Android 4.4 KITKAT using the AndroidRunTime (ART) instead of Dalvik runtime

Before you select your runtime, here a background check on the runtimes. The AndroidRunTime (ART) is available only on Android 4.4 KIKAT version so its good for you if you have a Nexus or Google Play Edition device or have customised your ROM to Android 4.4 KITKAT.  It is important to note that Dalvik will remain the default runtime on Android smart phones for a foreseeable future.  If you manage to delete the Dalvik runtime somehow you risk breaking your Android implementations and third-party applications (there are many Apps which dont support ART as of yet)

Of the two runtimes are now available, the existing Dalvik runtime filename is libdvm.so and the ART is libart.so. A device can be built using either or both. (You can dual boot from Developer options if both are installed.)    Dalvik which is named after a Icelandic village, has been the default runtime ever since Android OS was launched.  AndroidRunTime or ART has been developed and introduced with Android 4.4 KITKAT and may soon be the default runtime in future Android versions.

ART has a distinct advantage over Dalvik because Dalvik runs on the principle of 'Just-in-time' (JIT)  to compile a process which means it has to transform app source code into an executable program every time it starts.  Whereas the newly developed ART uses the mechanism called 'Ahead-of-time' (AOT) process for compilation.  In layman language this means that the ART does the compilation or conversion only once when the App is installed where as the Dalvik converts the Apps everytime you switch them off and on.
Enhancing the speed and Extending your battery life in Android 4.4 KITKAT using the AndroidRunTime (ART) instead of Dalvik runtime
Using ART, a specific App can get launched or converted twice as quickly as the existing Dalvik conversion.  In non technical terms this means that your Apps open up in a jiffy using ART giving you not only better speed but also extended battery life. The side effect of one time AOT processing makes your Apps launching a less resource intensive.  Which in effect means that your smart phone doesnt have to work that hard and this increases the battery life. The advantages of using ART may not be immediately visible to you but over time you will notice significant change in your battery charging structure as Apps which run in the background will now do so more efficiently.

Though it is being touted by the developers as the future of runtimes on Android devices but it does have some distinct disadvantages over Dalvik. One of the worst disadvantages is that it is a storage hogger.  Yes due to its AOT process compilation, it will cause your installed Apps to use more storage unlike Dalvik which has a on-demand need for space.  The rough cost estimate is that it will eat around 10 to 20 percent more space per App.  So, the users who have their smart phones filled with Apps and Games may not like this fact.   Larger Apps and Games means they will also take a little longer to install and you will get a inflated internet bill in case you are using limited data plans.  There is also a case for incompatibility. The older Android Apps just cant run on ART.  It is fine in case of big Apps like WhatsApp, Instagram etc. which are updated regularly but what about the small Apps launched by indie developers.  You certainly cant use them unless the developer updates them for AOT runtime.   Google has made things easy for users by putting out a list of ART compatible Apps. You can read the full list here.
Enhancing the speed and Extending your battery life in Android 4.4 KITKAT using the AndroidRunTime (ART) instead of Dalvik runtime
Now that you have understood what AndroidRunTime (ART) is you can give it a try by heading over to Settings > Developer Options > Select Runtime > Use ART (AndroidRunTime)

If you do give it a try, come back here and tell others about how you felt using ART.

Xolo Play Tegra Note gets Android 4.3 Android update, brings DirectStylus update and Always-On HDR support for Camera

The Xolo Play Tegra Note launched only a week ago has proved a nice hit for Nvidia and Xolo.  Xolo launched the Xolo Play Tegra Note in direct competition to the Samsung Note III and priced it very smartly at 17999.00.    Now to keep up the heat on the competition, Nvidia has started giving out OTA  4.3 update for its Tegra Note line up of devices.
Nvidia releases Android 4.3 OTA update for Tegra Note 7 lineup brings added DirectStylus support and AOHRD support for Camera, update you Xolo Play Tegra Note now

The Android 4.3 update brings a slew of improvements to the Nvidia Tegra Note line up and Indian Xolo Play Tegra Note.  First and foremost the update will make the Always-On HDR (AOHDR) available for the Xolo Play Tegra Note. Remember, though the Tegra lineup comes with Always-On HDR (AOHDR) function which improves image quality using NVIDIA's Chimera computational photography architecture, Xolo Play Tegra Note users could not use it to its full potential.    The update has also added video stabilization for shake free video and gives further options for tuning and optimizations to improve camera performance under certain lighting conditions.

Another USP of the Xolo Play Tegra Note is its DirectStylus feature. Now the updated devices will get DirectStylus help option under the device setting’s menu, a stylus removal and insert notification on the notification bar, and also gives users the ability to capture the notification bar with full-screen capture (screenshot).

In addition to the above two important features, the update has also fixed several security and bug issues which were reported after the Xolo launch. It will allow transferring app and data files from internal memory to an external microSD card.

Xolo is one of the companies which are manufacturing the Tegra Note 7 in India alongwith other international smart phone manufacturers like EVGA, ADVENT, Gigabyte, Shenzhen Homecare Technology, Zotac and Xolo.

If you own the Xolo Play Tegra Note, kindly go to the Settings > About Device > Software update and get the Android 4.3 through OTA.  Kindly use Wi-Fi as the update is a big one.  Other users of Nvidia Tegra Note lineup can also update their phones.
